The station opened in 1987 as part of the initial phase of the Docklands Light Railway, a project spearheaded by the London Docklands Development Corporation to regenerate the former Port of London docks. The station was built to interchange with the existing Network Rail station, which had been served by the London and Blackwall Railway since the 19th century. This integration was designed to provide seamless connections between the new light rail system and mainline services operated by British Rail, later succeeded by the c2c franchise.

Limehouse DLR station features two elevated side platforms serving a single track in each direction, a typical configuration for the original Docklands Light Railway infrastructure. The station structure is a functional, modernist design utilizing concrete and steel, characteristic of the late 20th-century architecture in the Docklands. It is directly connected via a footbridge and concourse to the mainline Limehouse railway station, facilitating easy interchange. Services

Limehouse is served by Docklands Light Railway trains on two primary routes. The typical service pattern, under the control of Keolis Amey Docklands, includes trains westbound to Bank in the City of London and eastbound to Stratford, home of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. During peak hours and on weekends, additional services operate to Beckton and Woolwich Arsenal. Trains are operated using the Bombardier Transportation INNOVIA automated rolling stock. The station is within Travelcard Zone 2 and is served by trains from approximately 5:30 am to just after midnight, with a frequency of every 3–10 minutes depending on the time of day.

The station's primary connection is with the adjacent Limehouse railway station, providing interchange to c2c services to Fenchurch Street station, Basildon, Southend Central, and other destinations in Essex along the London, Tilbury and Southend line. Local bus connections, operated by London Buses, include routes serving Canary Wharf, Poplar, Mile End, and Shadwell. The station is also within walking distance of numerous local amenities, the Regent's Canal, and the Thames Path. Its strategic location makes it a gateway to the commercial centres of Canary Wharf and the City of London.

Incidents

There have been few significant incidents reported at Limehouse DLR station. Like the wider Docklands Light Railway network, operations have been occasionally disrupted by signal failures, severe weather, and temporary suspensions for infrastructure upgrades managed by Transport for London. The station was unaffected by major events such as the 7 July 2005 London bombings, though security across the London Underground and Docklands Light Railway network was heightened following those attacks. Minor service alterations have occurred during events at the ExCeL London centre or the O2 Arena, which affect passenger flows across the network.
