Levi's Stadium

Levi's Stadium is an American football stadium located in Santa Clara, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley. It serves as the home venue for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League and has hosted major events including the Super Bowl and the FIFA World Cup. The stadium, which opened in 2014, is noted for its advanced technological integration and sustainable design, having achieved LEED Gold certification.

History and construction

The drive for a new stadium began in the mid-2000s as the San Francisco 49ers sought to replace the aging Candlestick Park. After considering locations in San Francisco and San Jose, the team and the City of Santa Clara reached an agreement, with voters approving a stadium financing measure in 2010. Groundbreaking occurred in April 2012 on a former Hewlett-Packard parking lot, with construction led by a joint venture of Turner Construction and Devcon Construction. The project faced challenges including cost overruns and a fatal construction accident in 2013, but was completed in time for its opening in July 2014, financed through a combination of NFL loans, private funding, and city-issued bonds.

Design and features

Designed by the architecture firm HNTB, Levi's Stadium features a modern, open-air design with a partially translucent roof canopy covering most seats. Its most distinctive exterior element is a green living wall, one of the largest in North America. The stadium is renowned for its technological infrastructure, featuring a vast Wi-Fi network and the 49ers Museum presented by Foxconn. The playing surface is a modular, tray-based system of Bermuda grass that can be rolled outside the stadium for sunlight. Sustainable features, which contributed to its LEED Gold rating, include a green roof, solar panels, and water recycling systems.

Events and operations

Beyond San Francisco 49ers home games, Levi's Stadium has hosted a wide array of major events. It was the site of Super Bowl 50 in 2016, the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship, and the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship. The venue has also staged concerts for major acts like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and The Rolling Stones, international soccer matches including Copa América Centenario and FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and other sporting events like WrestleMania 31. The stadium's operations are managed by the 49ers Stadium Management Company.

Tenants and management

The primary tenant is the San Francisco 49ers, who signed a 40-year lease with the Santa Clara Stadium Authority. From 2014 to 2019, the San Jose State Spartans football team also used the stadium for its home games. The stadium authority, a public agency created by the City of Santa Clara, owns the venue, while day-to-day management and booking are handled by the 49ers organization. Naming rights were purchased by Levi Strauss & Co. in a 20-year agreement, marking the first time a NFL stadium was named for a clothing brand.

Transportation and access

Located near the intersection of U.S. 101 and Great America Parkway, the stadium is accessible by multiple modes of transport. Public transit options include the Santa Clara station on the Altamont Corridor Express and Caltrain systems, with dedicated VTA light rail service on event days. The San Jose International Airport is approximately four miles away. Due to its urban setting, the stadium employs a comprehensive traffic management plan utilizing park-and-ride lots and promoting bicycle access with extensive bike parking.
