It lies directly east of the city of Leiden, from which it derives its name, and is part of the densely populated Randstad conurbation. History

The area's earliest settlements date to the Roman Empire, with archaeological finds indicating a presence along the Old Rhine. The name Leiderdorp, meaning "village on the Leitha" (an old name for a branch of the Rhine), first appears in official records from the Middle Ages. For centuries, its history was intertwined with Leiden, particularly during the Dutch Revolt and the subsequent Siege of Leiden in 1574, where the surrounding polders played a strategic role.
