Role in the Syrian Civil War

Since its activation, the base has functioned as the nerve center for Russia's aerial campaign in support of the Syrian Arab Army. It has hosted a rotating contingent of fighter aircraft like the Sukhoi Su-24, Sukhoi Su-25, Sukhoi Su-34, and Sukhoi Su-35, which conduct strikes against opposition forces including the Free Syrian Army, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, and remnants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Operations from this location were pivotal in the Battle of Aleppo (2012–2016), the Siege of Deir ez-Zor (2014–2017), and the 2018 Southern Syria offensive. A notable friendly fire incident involved the accidental downing of a Russian Air Force Ilyushin Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft by Syrian Air Defense Forces during an Israeli Air Force raid in September 2018, causing a diplomatic crisis between Russia and Israel.
