Israeli Air Force. It is the aerial warfare branch of the Israel Defense Forces, founded shortly after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. The force has played a decisive role in the nation's defense through numerous conflicts, earning a reputation for innovation, precision, and effectiveness. Its doctrine emphasizes air superiority, strategic strike, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities.

History

The force's origins trace to the pre-state Haganah air service, Sherut Avir, which operated light aircraft during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Its first major test came during the Suez Crisis, but it achieved legendary status in the Six-Day War, where it executed Operation Focus, a preemptive strike that decimated the air forces of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Following the attrition of the War of Attrition, it demonstrated remarkable resilience and recovery during the Yom Kippur War. Subsequent decades saw its involvement in the 1982 Lebanon War, operations during the First Intifada and Second Intifada, and continuous strikes against targets in Gaza and Syria.

Organization

Headquartered at the Kirya in Tel Aviv, it is commanded by an Aluf (Major General) who reports directly to the Chief of General Staff. Major operational commands include the Air Defense Command, responsible for integrated missile defense with systems like Iron Dome and David's Sling, and several airbase wings spread across the country, such as Ramon Airbase and Hatzerim Airbase. Specialized units like the elite Unit 669 combat search and rescue team and the Flying Camel squadron for heavy transport are integral to its structure. It works closely with other branches, particularly in supporting Sayeret Matkal and Shayetet 13 operations.

Aircraft

Its fleet is a mix of advanced U.S.-origin and indigenous platforms, centered on the F-35I Adir stealth fighter and the versatile F-16I Sufa. The F-15 Eagle series, including the F-15I Ra'am, provides long-range strike capability, while the Gulfstream G550 serves as an AEW&C and signals intelligence platform. Rotary-wing assets include the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and the CH-53 Yas'ur for heavy lift. It also operates a large fleet of Hermes 900 and Eitan unmanned aerial vehicles for reconnaissance and strike missions, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries.

Operations and conflicts

Beyond major wars, it has been continuously engaged in counter-terrorism and long-range strike operations. It conducted the Operation Opera raid on the Osirak nuclear reactor in Iraq and the similar Operation Orchard against a suspected nuclear facility in Syria. It maintains a persistent campaign, often attributed to it, against weapons convoys and infrastructure linked to Hezbollah in Lebanon and Iranian forces in Syria. In recent years, it has executed numerous operations in the Gaza Strip, including during conflicts like Operation Protective Edge and Operation Guardian of the Walls, targeting groups such as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Training and personnel

Pilots and aircrew undergo one of the world's most rigorous selection and training programs, beginning with flight screening at the Israeli Air Force Flight Academy located at Hatzerim Airbase. The curriculum emphasizes intense aerial combat maneuvering, low-altitude navigation, and live weapons training. Notable alumni include former President Ezer Weizman and former Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Ground crews and Air Intelligence Directorate analysts receive specialized training, and the force places a high value on technological aptitude, often recruiting top graduates from units like Unit 8200.

Technology and capabilities

Renowned for its technological edge, it integrates custom Israeli avionics and weapons onto its aircraft, such as the Python-5 air-to-air missile and the SPICE guidance kit for precision bombs. It is a global leader in Unmanned combat aerial vehicle technology, with systems like the IAI Harop. The force is a key partner in developing and deploying multi-layered air defense, including the Arrow system for ballistic missile interception. Its capabilities in Electronic warfare, cyber warfare, and space-based reconnaissance, through satellites like Ofek, provide a comprehensive battlespace awareness and strike network.
