Kate García

Kate García is an American actress and producer known for her work in independent film and television. She first gained significant attention for her role in the Sundance Film Festival-premiering drama The Last Light and has since built a career characterized by nuanced performances in character-driven projects. García has also expanded her creative influence through her production company, which focuses on developing stories from Latin American and Latino perspectives.

Early life and education

Born in Los Angeles to a family with roots in Mexico City, García was immersed in a bilingual environment from an early age. She attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where she studied theater, before enrolling at the University of Southern California. At USC, she double-majored in Cinematic Arts and Spanish, spending a formative year abroad studying at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Her academic work included a thesis on the films of director Alfonso Cuarón, which solidified her interest in narrative filmmaking.

Career

García's professional career began with guest roles on television series such as Cold Case and The Mentalist. Her breakthrough came in 2012 when she was cast in the supporting role of Elena in the indie film The Last Light, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was later distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures. This performance led to a recurring role on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black during its third season, playing a correctional officer. In 2017, she starred opposite John Cho in the thriller Searching, a role that earned her wider critical recognition. She co-founded the production company Sol Pictures in 2019, through which she executive produced the Hulu anthology series Them and the feature film Cielo, which was selected for the Toronto International Film Festival.

Personal life

García married cinematographer Alex Rivera in a private ceremony in Santa Barbara in 2018; the couple met on the set of the film Wind River. She is an active advocate for Latino representation in media and serves on the board of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. In her spare time, García is an avid supporter of Los Angeles FC and has participated in charity matches for the MLS Works program. She resides primarily in Silver Lake but maintains a home in Guadalajara.
