In 1609, the Tokugawa shogunate appointed Ōkubo Hideie as the daimyō of Satsuma Domain, and he renovated the castle, expanding its size and fortifications. The Ōkubo clan ruled Satsuma Domain from Kagoshima Castle until the Meiji Restoration.
