Jersey Mike's Arena

Jersey Mike's Arena is a multi-purpose arena located on the Livingston Campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. Primarily serving as the home venue for several Rutgers Scarlet Knights athletic programs, the facility has been a central hub for collegiate sports and entertainment in Central Jersey since its opening. Originally known as the Rutgers Athletic Center, the arena underwent a significant naming rights agreement in 2021, leading to its current title.

History

The arena was conceived during a period of expansion for Rutgers University athletics following its entry into the Big Ten Conference. Construction began in 1975, with the building designed by the renowned landscape architecture and planning firm Sasaki Associates. It opened in 1977 as the Rutgers Athletic Center, commonly abbreviated as the RAC, providing a modern home for the university's basketball and wrestling teams. A major renovation in 2007, funded in part by a donation from Rutgers University alumnus Louis Brown, added premium seating and improved amenities. The venue's most transformative redevelopment occurred in 2012, which included a comprehensive upgrade of concourses, restrooms, and concessions to enhance the fan experience.

The arena's main configuration supports 8,000 spectators for basketball games, creating an intimate and notoriously loud environment that has been dubbed "The Trapezoid of Terror" by sportswriters. For concerts and other large events, the capacity can expand to approximately 10,000. The playing surface is a standard NCAA-specification hardwood court, and the facility includes dedicated training and locker room spaces for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights men's and women's teams. Premium offerings include the Rutgers University Athletic Department's Louis Brown-funded club seats and several modern luxury suites. The concourse areas feature displays honoring program greats like Phil Sellers and the 1976 Final Four team.

Beyond serving as the home court for Rutgers Scarlet Knights Division I men's basketball, women's basketball, women's gymnastics, and wrestling, the arena hosts a wide array of events. It has been a frequent site for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association high school wrestling championships. The venue has also staged major concerts by artists including Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Metallica, as well as family shows like the Harlem Globetrotters. It has been selected to host early-round games in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament and the NIT. Commencement ceremonies for several Rutgers University schools are also held there annually.

Naming rights

In November 2021, Rutgers University announced a landmark 10-year naming rights partnership with Jersey Mike's Subs, a Manasquan, New Jersey-based fast casual restaurant chain founded by Peter Cancro. The multi-million dollar agreement led to the official renaming of the Rutgers Athletic Center. This corporate sponsorship deal, one of the largest in Big Ten Conference history for a standalone arena, provides significant financial support for the Rutgers University Athletic Department and its student-athletes. The transition from the RAC moniker was met with mixed reactions from alumni and fans accustomed to the traditional name.

The arena's distinctive, intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams has been featured in national sports media coverage by networks like ESPN and Fox Sports. It served as a filming location for scenes in the 2004 sports drama Game of Their Lives. The venue's name change inspired segments on local news programs such as NJ.com and News 12 New Jersey.
