The institution was originally established in 1967 as the College of Agriculture, operating under the former University of Huế during the Vietnam War. In 1994, as part of a national restructuring of higher education, it was formally renamed Huế University of Agriculture and Forestry and became a key constituent university of the newly formed Huế University system, a model similar to that of Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
