History

The settlement's prominence began in the 7th century as a principal seat of the Carolingian dynasty, notably under Pepin of Herstal, the Mayor of the Palace who ruled the Frankish Kingdom of Austrasia. His grandson, Charlemagne, is traditionally believed to have been born at the palace in Jupille, a former municipality now part of the town. Following the Treaty of Verdun, the region's importance waned, and it later became part of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. The Industrial Revolution transformed the local economy, with the establishment of the Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal (FN) in 1889 cementing its reputation in precision engineering. The town endured significant damage during both World War I and World War II, particularly during the Battle of Liège and the Battle of the Bulge.

Geography

Herstal is located in eastern Belgium, directly northeast of the city of Liège, with the Meuse river forming its southwestern border. The municipality includes the districts of Vottem, Milmort, and the previously mentioned Jupille-sur-Meuse. Its terrain is characterized by the river valley and the rising slopes of the Hesbaye plateau to the north. The area is part of the densely populated Sillon industriel, the historical industrial backbone of Wallonia. Several tributaries and canals, integral to its industrial past, traverse the locality.

Economy

The economy has long been dominated by manufacturing, most famously by Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal (FN Herstal), a world-leading manufacturer of military small arms such as the FN FAL rifle and the FN MAG machine gun, and its subsidiary Browning. The presence of Cockerill-Sambre (now part of ArcelorMittal) historically made it a center for metallurgy. While heavy industry has declined, the sector remains vital, supplemented by logistics, retail, and service industries. The town hosts numerous subcontracting firms in precision mechanics and maintains strong ties with the University of Liège and research parks in the region for technological innovation.
