Hallé. The Hallé is a symphony orchestra based in Manchester, England, and is the oldest professional orchestra in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1858 by the pianist and conductor Charles Hallé, it has played a central role in British musical life for over 160 years. The orchestra performs its main concert series at Bridgewater Hall and has been led by a distinguished lineage of music directors, contributing significantly to the cultural landscape of Northern England.

History

The orchestra was established by Charles Hallé to perform at the Art Treasures Exhibition in 1858, a major cultural event held in Manchester. Following the exhibition's success, Hallé was persuaded to form a permanent orchestra, which gave its first concert under that name in January 1858. The ensemble quickly became a fixture of the city's life, performing at the Free Trade Hall for over a century. Hallé Choir

The Hallé Choir is the orchestra's principal chorus, founded in 1858 by Charles Hallé as the Hallé Choir. It is one of the UK's oldest independent choirs and has been an integral part of the orchestra's performances of major choral works. The choir has worked under every music director, including Hans Richter on landmark performances of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and John Barbirolli on works by Vaughan Williams. Based at the Bridgewater Hall, it regularly performs masterpieces such as Brahms's *Ein deutsches Requiem*, Fauré's *Requiem*, and Britten's War Requiem. The choir also collaborates with other ensembles like the BBC Philharmonic and the Royal Northern College of Music.

Hallé Youth Orchestra

Founded in 2003, the Hallé Youth Orchestra provides advanced training and performance experience for talented young musicians aged 12 to 19 from across the North West. It forms a core part of the orchestra's education program, Hallé Education. Members rehearse at the Bridgewater Hall and perform a challenging repertoire under professional conductors, including the Hallé's music director and guests like Sir Mark Elder. The ensemble undertakes concert tours, including performances at the BBC Proms and international venues, and often collaborates with other youth groups such as the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Many of its alumni have progressed to study at conservatoires like the Royal Academy of Music and have joined professional orchestras including the Hallé itself.
