FNSS ACV-15. The FNSS ACV-15 is a family of tracked armoured personnel carriers developed and manufactured in Turkey by the defence contractor FNSS Savunma Sistemleri. Derived from the American AIFV design, which itself evolved from the M113 armored personnel carrier, the vehicle entered service with the Turkish Land Forces in the early 1990s. It has been deployed in various combat and peacekeeping roles and exported to several allied nations.

Development and design

The ACV-15's development originated from a 1988 co-production agreement between the Turkish government and the United States defense firm FMC Corporation. This partnership led to the establishment of FNSS Savunma Sistemleri as a joint venture. The design is a licensed, modified version of the FMC-designed AIFV, incorporating lessons from its use in conflicts like the Vietnam War. Key modifications for the Turkish military included enhanced ballistic protection against small arms fire and shell fragments, a more powerful Cummins diesel engine, and an improved Allison Transmission system. The vehicle's hull is constructed from welded steel armour, and it utilizes a robust torsion bar suspension system for cross-country mobility. The design philosophy emphasized creating a versatile platform capable of being adapted into multiple specialized variants to meet the diverse needs of modern mechanized infantry units.

Variants

The adaptable ACV-15 chassis serves as the basis for a comprehensive family of vehicles. The baseline Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) variant typically mounts a 12.7 mm M2 Browning heavy machine gun in a cupola. The Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle (AIFV) variant is more heavily armed, often featuring a one-person turret equipped with a 25 mm M242 Bushmaster chain gun, as used by the Turkish Armed Forces. Other significant variants include the Armoured Mortar Carrier, fitted with an 81 mm or 120 mm mortar; the Armoured Anti-Tank Vehicle, armed with MILAN or TOW anti-tank guided missiles; and a Command Post vehicle. Additional specialized models developed include recovery, ambulance, and reconnaissance versions, demonstrating the platform's modularity. The successful design lineage continued with the more modern and larger FNSS Pars 8x8 wheeled vehicle family.

Operational history

The ACV-15 achieved its first major operational deployment with the Turkish Land Forces, seeing extensive action in counter-insurgency operations against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Its combat performance in the rugged terrain of the Taurus Mountains validated its mobility and protection levels. Internationally, vehicles operated by the United Arab Emirates were deployed as part of the Arab League mandate during the Lebanese Civil War. Malaysia deployed its ACV-15s, known locally as the ACV-300 Adnan, on peacekeeping missions under the United Nations in regions like Lebanon and Somalia. The Philippine Army has utilized its units in operations against Islamist militant groups such as the Abu Sayyaf and the Maute group in Mindanao.

Operators

The primary operator is the Turkish Land Forces, with hundreds of vehicles in its inventory. Significant export customers have included the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, the Royal Malaysian Army, and the Philippine Army. Other known operators are the Saudi Arabian National Guard, the Jordanian Armed Forces, and the Spanish Army, the latter having acquired a small number. The vehicle's adoption by these various nations across Southeast Asia and the Middle East underscores its success as a Turkish defense export and its suitability for a range of climatic and operational environments.

Specifications

The ACV-15 has a combat weight ranging from 13 to 15 tonnes depending on variant and armour configuration. It is powered by a Cummins 6CTA 8.3-liter turbocharged diesel engine, producing 275 horsepower, coupled to an Allison MD3560 automatic transmission. This gives it a maximum road speed of approximately 65 km/h and an operational range of 500 km. Standard protection is from welded steel armour, with add-on kits available. The baseline personnel carrier has a crew of three (commander, driver, gunner) and can transport a full infantry squad of eight soldiers. Armament varies widely by role, from heavy machine guns and automatic cannons to anti-tank missile launchers and mortars.
