Geography

East Meadow is situated on the Hempstead Plains, a historically significant prairie region of Long Island. Its boundaries are generally defined by the Meadowbrook State Parkway to the west, the Wantagh State Parkway to the east, and Old Country Road to the south. A significant portion of the community's geography is occupied by Eisenhower Park, a 930-acre park that contains the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the Nassau County Museum of Art at Eisenhower Park, and numerous sports facilities. The parkland was originally part of the vast Meadow Brook estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post and later served as a major base for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.

History

The area was part of the common lands of the Town of Hempstead, settled in the 17th century, and was used primarily for grazing. In the late 19th century, the Long Island Rail Road's extension spurred some development, but the region remained largely agricultural. A major transformation began in the 1940s when the United States Department of War acquired over 1,200 acres to establish Mitchel Field, a key airfield named for former New York City mayor John Purroy Mitchel. After World War II, the base was deactivated, and much of the land was repurposed for Eisenhower Park and suburban housing, leading to a population boom. The community was formally named a census-designated place in the 1950s.

As of the 2020 United States Census, East Meadow had a population of approximately 37,995. The demographic profile reflects the broader diversity of Nassau County. A significant portion of residents claim Italian, Irish, Jewish, and increasingly Asian and Hispanic ancestries. While the community does not have its own Long Island Rail Road station, its road network provides direct connections to John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia Airports.
