China Southern Airlines. It is one of the Big Three airline groups of the People's Republic of China and is consistently ranked among the world's largest airlines by fleet size and passenger numbers. Headquartered in Guangzhou, its primary operational hubs are Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and the newer Beijing Daxing International Airport, positioning it as a major carrier for both southern and northern China. The airline is a founding member of the SkyTeam global alliance and its frequent-flyer program is known as the Sky Pearl Club.

History

The airline traces its origins to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), which was the sole aviation authority and operator in the country for decades. Following economic reforms, the aviation sector was restructured, leading to the official establishment of the airline in the late 1980s. A significant milestone was its initial public offering on both the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the Shanghai Stock Exchange in the 1990s, marking a major step in its corporatization. The carrier expanded rapidly through mergers, most notably absorbing China Northern Airlines and Xinjiang Airlines in the early 2000s under the consolidation policies directed by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission. It joined the SkyTeam alliance in 2007, becoming the first mainland Chinese carrier to join a major global airline alliance.

Fleet

The airline operates one of the youngest and largest fleets in Asia, consisting predominantly of aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. Its mainline operations feature a substantial number of A320neo and 737 Next Generation aircraft for short to medium-haul routes. For long-haul international services, the fleet includes modern wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Subsidiaries and alliances

The airline group encompasses several subsidiary carriers, including Xiamen Airlines, which operates its own brand and fleet, and Chongqing Airlines, a joint venture. Its membership in the SkyTeam alliance facilitates extensive codeshare partnerships with global carriers like Delta Air Lines, Air France, and Korean Air. Beyond the alliance, it maintains strategic cooperative agreements with other major airlines such as American Airlines and British Airways. The group also controls specialized subsidiaries such as China Southern Aviation Company Limited for leasing and Zhuhai Flight Training Center for pilot training.

Accidents and incidents

The airline's safety record includes several notable events. A significant accident occurred in 1992 involving a Boeing 737 near Guilin, resulting in substantial loss of life. Another major incident took place in 1997 when a Boeing 737 overran the runway at Shenzhen Huangtian Airport. In 2008, a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 experienced a landing gear malfunction upon arrival at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. These events have contributed to ongoing enhancements in aviation safety protocols within China, overseen by the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

The airline is a state-owned enterprise, with its major shareholder being China Southern Air Holding Company, which is directly supervised by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council of the People's Republic of China. Its corporate headquarters are located in the Guangzhou district of Baiyun. The company is publicly listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
