Carrier Strike Group 2

Carrier Strike Group 2 is a United States Navy carrier strike group, currently homeported at Naval Station Norfolk and administratively under the authority of United States Fleet Forces Command. The group's centerpiece is the ''Nimitz''-class supercarrier , which serves as the flagship for the embarked carrier air wing and destroyer squadron. It is a principal instrument of American naval power projection and a key component of U.S. Northern Command and U.S. European Command areas of responsibility.

History

The group traces its lineage to the earlier Cruiser-Destroyer Group 2, which was redesignated in October 2004 as part of the Navy's transition to the Carrier Strike Group construct. Its historical operations are deeply intertwined with the service life of its primary carrier, , which was commissioned in 1977 and has undergone multiple refueling and complex overhauls. The group has participated in major naval exercises like BALTOPS and Joint Warrior, while also responding to global crises. A significant chapter in its history includes sustained combat operations in support of Operation Inherent Resolve against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Composition

The group is built around the aircraft carrier and its embarked Carrier Air Wing, typically Carrier Air Wing Three, which operates a mix of F/A-18 Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, E-2D Hawkeyes, and CMV-22B Ospreys. The surface combatant element usually consists of at least one ''Ticonderoga''-class cruiser, such as , and a squadron of ''Arleigh Burke''-class destroyers from Destroyer Squadron 22. This composition is regularly augmented by attached attack submarines and fleet replenishment ships from the Military Sealift Command for extended deployments.

Deployments and operations

The group has conducted numerous deployments to the U.S. Fifth and U.S. Sixth Fleet areas of operations. Notable deployments include a 2016 dual-carrier operation with the ''Harry S. Truman'' Strike Group in the Persian Gulf, and a 2020 deployment that broke a record for consecutive days at sea due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has executed freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea, provided air support for coalition forces in Afghanistan, and conducted maritime security patrols in the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Sea. In 2023, the group was rapidly deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean following the outbreak of the Israel–Hamas war.

Command structure

Tactical command is exercised by the Carrier Strike Group 2 commander, a rear admiral in the United States Navy. This commander leads the Carrier Strike Group staff and oversees the major subordinate commanders: the commanding officer of , the commander of Carrier Air Wing Three, and the commodore of Destroyer Squadron 22. The group is operationally assigned to numbered fleets, such as the United States Sixth Fleet, during deployments, while remaining under the administrative oversight of United States Fleet Forces Command when in home waters.
