Brioude. Brioude is a historic town and subprefecture situated in the Haute-Loire department within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of south-central France. It lies in the fertile Limagne plain along the banks of the Allier River, a major tributary of the Loire. The town is internationally renowned for its magnificent Basilica of St. Julien, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture and a key stop on the Way of St. James pilgrimage route.

Brioude is positioned in the upper Allier valley, approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Clermont-Ferrand. The town's landscape is characterized by the broad, flat expanse of the Limagne basin, surrounded by the volcanic uplands of the Massif Central. The Allier River flows northward past the town, providing a vital hydrological and ecological corridor. History

The site has been inhabited since antiquity, with evidence of a Gallo-Roman settlement. Its significance grew with the martyrdom of Saint Julien of Brioude, a Roman soldier, in the late 3rd century, whose relics made it a major early Christian pilgrimage center. During the Middle Ages, Brioude flourished under the protection of the powerful Chapter of Saint Julien, a collegiate chapter of canons which wielded considerable temporal power. The town was a frequent possession of the Counts of Auvergne and later the Dukes of Bourbon, seeing conflict during the Hundred Years' War and the French Wars of Religion. Following the French Revolution, it became the subprefecture of the Haute-Loire department.

The foremost landmark is the Basilica of St. Julien, the largest Romanesque church in Auvergne, celebrated for its intricate polychrome masonry and extensive medieval frescoes. The Hôtel de la Dentelle houses a museum dedicated to the history of lace-making, a traditional craft of the Velay region. The historic town center features well-preserved medieval and Renaissance houses, such as the Maison du Saumon and the Hôtel de l'Écu de France. The nearby Château de Beaumont offers panoramic views of the Allier valley, while the Pont de la Chartreuse is a notable 19th-century bridge.

The local economy is diversified, with a strong base in manufacturing, particularly in the aerospace and metallurgy sectors, linked to the industrial basin of Clermont-Ferrand. Agriculture remains important, focusing on livestock farming, cereals, and the renowned Lentilles vertes du Puy (green lentils). Tourism is a significant driver, centered on the cultural heritage of the Basilica of St. Julien and outdoor activities like fishing on the Allier, hiking in the Margeride mountains, and cycling along the "Voie Verte" greenway. The town also hosts a weekly market and several annual festivals, including the "Fête de la Saint-Julien."

The medieval philosopher and theologian Pierre Abelard sought refuge at the Abbey of La Chartreuse du Port-Sainte-Marie near Brioude. The 19th-century historian and archaeologist Charles de Gerville conducted important studies on the town's basilica. French Resistance hero Émile Coulaudon, a key figure in the Liberation of Clermont-Ferrand, was born here. Contemporary figures include former professional footballer Laurent Peyrelade and Olympic medalist in canoeing Éric le Leuch.
