The development was spearheaded by the Beetham Organization, a property group founded by Stephen H. Beetham. The site, near Deansgate, was previously occupied by a 1960s office block. Its completion coincided with a broader boom in high-rise construction across the United Kingdom, particularly in city centres like Birmingham and Leeds.
