Early life and education

Andrea Canning was born on December 10, 1972, in Peterborough, Ontario. She developed an early interest in journalism and pursued her higher education in the field. Canning earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Western Ontario. She furthered her professional training by completing a postgraduate degree in broadcast journalism from Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) in Toronto.

Career

Canning began her broadcasting career in Canada during the mid-1990s. She worked as a reporter and anchor for CKVR-TV in Barrie, Ontario, and later for CITY-TV in Toronto. Her work in Canadian news led to a position with ABC News as a correspondent for its digital network. In 2004, she joined NBC News as a correspondent based in the network's Burbank, California bureau, covering stories across the Western United States for programs like NBC Nightly News and Today. She became a full-time correspondent for Dateline NBC in 2012, where she has reported on numerous investigative pieces and true crime stories. Canning was named a co-anchor of the weekend edition of Today in 2012, sharing the desk with Lester Holt and later Willie Geist. Personal life

Andrea Canning married television producer Tony Bancroft in 2005. The couple resides in Connecticut and has six children. She is a dual citizen of Canada and the United States. Outside of her journalism career, Canning is involved with several charitable organizations, including those focused on children's health and welfare.
