Aberdeen Sports Village

Aberdeen Sports Village. It is a major multi-sport facility located on the campus of the University of Aberdeen in the Aberdeen suburb of Tillydrone. Opened in 2009, the complex was developed as a partnership between the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen City Council to provide elite and community sporting infrastructure for the north-east of Scotland. History

The development was conceived in the early 2000s to address a shortage of high-quality, integrated sports facilities in Aberdeen. Key funding was secured from Sportscotland, the national agency for sport, alongside major investments from the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen City Council. The project also received support from the European Regional Development Fund. Construction began in 2007 on the site of the former Chris Anderson Stadium, with the facility officially opening in August 2009. A significant second-phase expansion, including an international-standard indoor athletics centre, was completed in 2014 following a successful bid for funding from the UK Government's Libor banking fines.

Facilities

The complex features a wide array of indoor and outdoor facilities designed for both performance and participation. The indoor centre houses a 100m six-lane straight sprint track and a 60m four-lane track, alongside dedicated areas for field events like pole vault, long jump, and high jump. A large multi-purpose sports hall accommodates sports such as badminton, basketball, netball, and volleyball. Other key indoor amenities include two fitness suites, dedicated strength and conditioning rooms, combat sports areas, and studios for yoga and group exercise. Outdoor facilities include a full-size, floodlit synthetic pitch for rugby union and football, a dedicated hockey pitch, and multiple grass playing fields.

Major events

It has hosted numerous significant competitions since its opening, establishing itself as a premier venue in Scottish sport. It is a regular host for events within the Scottish Athletics calendar, including national championships. The venue has staged international fixtures in hockey, including matches for the Scottish national teams. It served as an official pre-Games training camp for athletes ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The facility has also been selected to host rounds of prestigious UK-wide competitions like the British Athletics League and has welcomed events for sports such as fencing and taekwondo.

Community and university use

The facility operates with a strong dual-use ethos, integrating the needs of the University of Aberdeen's students and staff with the wider public. It is the primary training and competition base for the University of Aberdeen's performance sports teams, known as the Aberdeen University Athletic Club, and supports campus-wide health initiatives. For the community, it runs extensive programming including children's activity camps, after-school clubs, and courses for all ages and abilities. The venue partners with local sports clubs, such as Aberdeen Amateur Athletic Club and various hockey and football clubs, and hosts sessions for organizations like the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers.

The complex is operated by Aberdeen Sports Village Ltd, a charitable company limited by guarantee, jointly owned by the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen City Council. This partnership model ensures shared strategic oversight and financial responsibility. Day-to-day management is handled by a professional team reporting to a board of directors with representatives from both owners and independent members. Core funding is derived from membership subscriptions, pay-as-you-go user fees, and venue hire for events. The operating company also pursues external grant funding from bodies like Sportscotland and The National Lottery Community Fund for specific development projects and outreach programs.
