55th Wing. The 55th Wing is a major command and control, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance unit of the United States Air Force, headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. As the Air Force's largest wing, it operates a diverse fleet of specialized aircraft, primarily the Boeing RC-135 family, to provide critical global intelligence to national leadership and combatant commanders. History

Activated in 1948 as the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico, the unit initially flew the RB-29 Superfortress during the early Cold War. It transitioned to the RB-50 Superfortress and later the RB-47 Stratojet, conducting vital electronic and photographic reconnaissance missions. During the Vietnam War, the wing's RC-135 variants, deployed from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa and U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Airfield in Thailand, provided critical signals intelligence. Following the war, it was redesignated the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing and continued its global mission, with its aircraft monitoring events like the Soviet–Afghan War. After the Gulf War, it was renamed the 55th Wing in 1991 and consolidated its operations at Offutt Air Force Base, where it has since supported every major U.S. conflict, including the War in Afghanistan and Iraq War.

Organization

The wing is composed of several groups and squadrons specializing in distinct operational and support functions. The 55th Operations Group oversees all flying squadrons, including the 38th, 45th, 82nd, 95th, and 338th Reconnaissance Squadrons, which operate the various RC-135 models. The 55th Maintenance Group provides comprehensive aircraft maintenance and logistics support for the fleet. The 55th Electronic Combat Group, headquartered at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona, manages the EC-130H Compass Call aircraft. Additional support is provided by the 55th Mission Support Group and the 55th Medical Group, ensuring the readiness of personnel and infrastructure at Offutt Air Force Base.

Missions and operations

The primary mission is global intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, collecting signals intelligence, telemetry, and atmospheric data. Its aircraft support combatant commands worldwide, including United States Strategic Command, United States Indo-Pacific Command, and United States Central Command. Crews conduct real-time reconnaissance during crises, monitor arms control treaties like the Treaty on Open Skies with the OC-135B, and track ballistic missile launches. The wing's WC-135 Constant Phoenix samples the atmosphere for evidence of nuclear detonations, supporting the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. These operations provide essential data to the President of the United States, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and battlefield commanders.

Aircraft

The wing operates a specialized fleet based on the Boeing RC-135 airframe, each variant configured for a specific intelligence role. These include the RC-135V/W Rivet Joint for signals intelligence, the RC-135S Cobra Ball for ballistic missile tracking, and the RC-135U Combat Sent for electronic order of battle analysis. Other unique aircraft are the WC-135 Constant Phoenix for nuclear explosion detection and the OC-135B Open Skies, which supports treaty verification flights. The 55th Electronic Combat Group operates the EC-130H Compass Call for electronic attack missions.

Bases

The wing's headquarters and primary operational base is Offutt Air Force Base, located near Bellevue, Nebraska, which has been its home since 1966. This installation serves as the main hub for maintenance, mission planning, and crew training for the RC-135 fleet. The 55th Electronic Combat Group is based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. Throughout its history, the wing has maintained forward operating locations and has regularly deployed aircraft to bases such as RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom, Kadena Air Base in Japan, and Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

Emblem and heritage

The wing's emblem features a shield with a black background, symbolizing the secrecy of reconnaissance, and a single, vigilant eye, representing the motto "Videmus Omnia" (We See All). A lightning bolt denotes the speed and electronic nature of its missions. The unit's heritage is traced to the 55th Fighter Group of World War II, which flew P-38 Lightning and P-51 Mustang aircraft in the European Theater of Operations.
