Anti-lynching movement. The anti-lynching movement was a sustained, multi-decade campaign within the broader early civil rights movement and the later modern Civil Rights Movement to eradicate the extrajudicial killing of African Americans, primarily in the Southern United States. It involved investigative journalism, political lobbying, grassroots organizing, and cultural work to expose the brutality of lynching, challenge its justification as a tool of racial terror, and demand federal legal protection. The movement's long struggle for a national law culminated in the 21st century with the passage of the Emmett Till Antilynching Act.

Origins and early activism

Organized resistance to lynching emerged in the late 19th century as a response to the surge in racial violence following the end of Reconstruction. Early efforts were often led by African-American churches and local Black newspapers, which published accounts of lynchings and condemned the complicity of local law enforcement and the white supremacist ideology underpinning them. One of the first national organizations to take up the cause was the Afro-American League, founded in 1890 by T. Thomas Fortune. The National Association of Colored Women, led by figures like Mary Church Terrell, also incorporated anti-lynching advocacy into its platform, framing lynching as a attack on Black families and community stability.

The movement was propelled by a coalition of organizations and courageous individuals. The pioneering work of Ida B. Key leaders within the NAACP included W.E.B. Du Bois, who used the pages of The Crisis magazine to document lynching, and James Weldon Johnson, who lobbied Congress. The Association of Southern Women for the Prevention of Lynching, led by Jessie Daniel Ames, worked to undermine the racist myth that lynching was necessary to protect white womanhood. Later, the Communist Party USA also took a prominent role in specific cases, most notably the defense of the Scottsboro Boys.

Legislative efforts and resistance

For over a century, activists fought for a federal law that would define lynching as a federal crime. Between 1882 and 1968, nearly 200 anti-lynching bills were introduced in Congress. The Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill, sponsored by Republican Leonidas C. Dyer and backed by the NAACP, passed the House in 1922 but was filibustered to death in the Senate by Southern Democrats. Subsequent efforts, like the 1935 Costigan-Wagner Bill, met the same fate due to the power of the Southern bloc and arguments for states' rights. Ida B. Wells became the preeminent figure of the early anti-lynching movement through her groundbreaking work as an investigative journalist. Following the 1892 lynching of her friends in Memphis, Wells began a systematic investigation into lynching cases across the South. Her pamphlets, including Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases and The Red Record, used white press reports and statistics to debunk the common rape accusation narrative, instead exposing lynching as a tool of economic and political suppression. Her lectures across the United States and United Kingdom brought international pressure to bear on the issue and established a data-driven model for civil rights advocacy.

The NAACP and national campaigns

Upon its founding, the NAACP adopted the anti-lynching cause as a primary focus. The organization's efforts were multifaceted: it conducted its own investigations, published the annual Thirty Years of Lynching in the United States, 1889-1918, and provided legal aid. A major tactic was the national publicity campaign, most famously the 1917 Silent Parade in New York City, organized by the NAACP New York City Branch to protest lynching and the East St. Louis riots. For decades, the NAACP's Washington, D.C., bureau, under leaders like Walter Francis White, relentlessly lobbied Congress. The organization also flew a flag from its Fifth Avenue office bearing the words "A Man Was Lynched Yesterday" whenever a killing was reported.
