Wallerstein. Immanuel Wallerstein (1930–2019) was an influential American sociologist and economic historian, best known for developing world-systems theory. Immanuel Wallerstein was born in New York City and earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Columbia University, where he was initially a scholar of post-colonial Africa. He taught at Columbia University until 1971, when he moved to McGill University in Montreal.
