The Treaty of Giyanti (Perjanjian Giyanti) was a pivotal agreement signed on 13 February 1755 that formally partitioned the Mataram Sultanate on the island of Java into two rival principalities: the Surakarta Sunanate under Pakubuwono III and the Yogyakarta Sultanate under Mangkubumi, who became Hamengkubuwono I. The treaty was brokered and guaranteed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), marking a decisive moment where the Dutch colonial power transitioned from a commercial partner to the supreme political arbiter in Javanese affairs. Its significance lies in cementing a strategy of divide and rule, which weakened indigenous political structures and facilitated deeper Dutch penetration and control over Java's resources and people, a cornerstone of Dutch colonization in Southeast Asia.

The treaty was the culmination of the Third Javanese War of Succession (1749–1757), a protracted and devastating civil war within the Mataram Sultanate. The conflict originated from disputed successions and growing resentment against the increasing political and economic demands of the VOC, which held a monopoly on the coffee trade and other commodities. Key claimants to the throne included Pakubuwono II, his son Pakubuwono III, and the prince Mangkubumi, who led a formidable rebellion. The VOC, under Governor-General Gustaaf Willem van Imhoff and later Jacob Mossel, had militarily supported Pakubuwono III but found itself unable to decisively defeat Mangkubumi's forces. The war caused widespread destruction across Central Java, crippling the local economy and demonstrating the limits of VOC military power, prompting a shift towards diplomatic manipulation.

Terms and Provisions of the Treaty

The treaty, negotiated by VOC official Nicolas Hartingh, established a formal division of the once-unified kingdom. The primary provisions allocated the eastern half of Mataram, centered on the court of Surakarta, to Pakubuwono III, who retained the title of Susuhunan. The western half, with a new court established at Yogyakarta, was granted to Mangkubumi, who took the title Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. Crucially, both rulers were required to swear allegiance to the VOC, confirm all existing contracts and monopolies held by the Company, and seek Dutch approval for foreign policy and significant internal appointments. The treaty also included stipulations on revenue sharing, particularly from the lucrative Preanger coffee plantations, and mandated that both courts provide levies and logistical support to Dutch forces.

The immediate effect was the permanent fragmentation of the Mataram Sultanate, creating the rival states of Surakarta and Yogyakarta. This division institutionalized political competition between the two courts, which were compelled to rely on VOC support to maintain their positions against each other and internal dissent. A secondary rebellion led by Raden Mas Said (later Mangkunegara I) continued until the 1757 Treaty of Salatiga, which further fractured the region by creating the Mangkunegaran principality. The VOC emerged as the ultimate power broker, with its resident advisors wielding immense influence in both courts. The social and economic toll of the war was immense, leading to population displacement and consolidating Dutch control over key agricultural production.

Long-term Impact on Javanese Politics

The treaty set a precedent for Dutch intervention in Javanese succession disputes, ensuring future rulers were dependent on colonial recognition. This dependency eroded the traditional authority and autonomy of the Javanese monarchy, transforming the sultans and sunans into clients of the VOC and, later, the Dutch East Indies government. The artificial rivalry between Surakarta and Yogyakarta prevented the emergence of a unified Javanese resistance front for over a century. This political fragmentation was exploited during the Java War (1825–1830) led by Prince Diponegoro of Yogyakarta, as the Surakarta court sided with the Dutch. The treaty's legacy entrenched a system of indirect rule that characterized much of Dutch colonial administration in Java.
