Tiverton, Rhode Island, located in Newport County, is a town with a rich history, situated near Fall River, Massachusetts and Newport, Rhode Island. The town is bordered by the Sakonnet River to the east and the Narragansett Bay to the west, and is close to Little Compton, Rhode Island and Westport, Massachusetts. Geography

Tiverton is situated on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, near Aquidneck Island and Conanicut Island, and is close to the Sakonnet River and Mount Hope Bay. The town is bordered by Little Compton, Rhode Island to the south and Fall River, Massachusetts to the north, and is near New Bedford, Massachusetts and Dartmouth, Massachusetts. History

The area that is now Tiverton was originally inhabited by the Narragansett Native American tribe and the Wampanoag Native American tribe, and was later settled by Plymouth Colony and Massachusetts Bay Colony. The town was named after Tiverton, Devon in England, and was incorporated in 1746 as part of Massachusetts, before becoming part of Rhode Island in 1747. Tiverton is near the site of the Battle of Freetown, which took place during King Philip's War, and is close to the Newport Historic District and the Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island. The town is also near the Breakers and The Elms in Newport, Rhode Island, which were built by the Vanderbilt family.
