Tarrytown, New York is a village located in Westchester County, New York, along the eastern bank of the Hudson River, and is situated approximately 25 miles north of New York City. The village is bordered by the towns of Greenburgh, New York and Sleepy Hollow, New York, and is near the Tappan Zee Bridge and the New York State Thruway. Tarrytown is also close to the Hudson River Valley and the Hudson Highlands, and is near the Bear Mountain State Park and the Harriman State Park. The village is home to many notable residents, including Washington Irving, who lived in the nearby Sunnyside (estate), and Mark Twain, who lived in the nearby Redding, Connecticut.

Geography

History

The area that is now Tarrytown, New York was originally settled by the Wecquaeskeck Native American tribe, and was later colonized by the Dutch West India Company in the 17th century. The village was named after the Tarrytown (ship), which was a British ship that sailed up the Hudson River in the 18th century. Tarrytown, New York was also home to many notable historical figures, including Washington Irving, who lived in the nearby Sunnyside (estate), and Mark Twain, who lived in the nearby Redding, Connecticut. The village was also the site of the famous Headless Horseman legend, which was popularized by Washington Irving in his book The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
