Nutbush, Tennessee is an unincorporated community located in Haywood County, near the Forked Deer River and Tennessee State Route 19. The community is situated approximately 10 miles north of Brownsville and 45 miles northeast of Memphis, home to Memphis International Airport and FedEx. Nutbush is also close to the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge and the Chickasaw National Wildlife Refuge, which are managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

Geography

Nutbush is nestled in the Mississippi Embayment region of western Tennessee, near the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The community is surrounded by fertile alluvial plains and loess hills, which are drained by the Forked Deer River and its tributaries, including Cypress Creek and Middle Fork Creek. The area's geography is similar to that of nearby Dyer County and Gibson County, which are also located in the Mississippi Embayment. Nutbush is close to the Tennessee Valley Authority's Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, which are popular destinations for outdoor recreation and tourism, attracting visitors from Nashville and Knoxville.

History

The area that is now Nutbush was originally inhabited by the Chickasaw and Cherokee tribes, who were later forcibly removed to Indian Territory during the Trail of Tears. The community was established in the early 19th century, with the arrival of European-American settlers, including Scots-Irish Americans and English Americans, who were attracted to the area's fertile soil and access to the Forked Deer River. Nutbush was also an important stop on the Memphis, Clarksville and Louisville Railroad, which connected the community to Memphis and Louisville. The community is also near the Shiloh National Military Park, which commemorates the Battle of Shiloh during the American Civil War.

As of the 2010 census, the population of Nutbush was approximately 259 people, with a median age of 32.4 years. The community has a diverse population, with a mix of African Americans, European Americans, and Hispanic and Latino Americans. Nutbush is also home to a number of veterans, including those who served in the United States Army, United States Navy, and United States Air Force. The community is part of the Memphis, TN-MS-AR Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes DeSoto County, Marshall County, and Tipton County.
