The collection grew substantially under directors like J.F. van Bemmelen, incorporating important ethnographic artifacts from the Dutch colonies. After occupying spaces in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag complex, the institution, renamed Museon, moved to its purpose-built current home in 1985. This move coincided with a major shift towards interactive, thematic exhibitions on topics like geology, anthropology, and space exploration.

Quist of the firm OD205, the structure is characterized by its clean, modernist lines and use of natural light. The interior is organized around a large, central atrium that facilitates flexible exhibition spaces and clear visitor circulation. A significant renovation was completed in 2016 to modernize facilities and improve sustainability. The building's location, adjacent to the The Hague Municipal Museum and not far from the Panorama Mesdag, makes it a key part of the city's cultural cluster.
