Mercersburg, Pennsylvania is a borough located in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, near the Mason-Dixon Line and the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. It is situated approximately 30 miles southwest of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and 70 miles northwest of Frederick, Maryland. The borough is home to Mercersburg Academy, a prestigious boarding school founded in 1836 by John Williamson Nevin and Samuel Simon Schmucker, and is also close to the Antietam National Battlefield and the Gettysburg National Military Park.

Geography

History

The area that is now Mercersburg, Pennsylvania was originally settled by German-American and Scottish-American farmers in the 18th century, who were attracted by the fertile soil and abundant natural resources of the Great Valley of Pennsylvania. The borough was founded in 1786 and was named after Hugh Mercer, a Scottish-American physician and soldier who served in the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. During the American Civil War, the borough was a key stop on the Underground Railroad, with many abolitionists, including John Brown (abolitionist), Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Tubman, passing through the area on their way to Canada and Ohio.
