Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey is a borough located in Bergen County, New Jersey, situated approximately 10 miles northwest of New York City and near the Hackensack River. The borough is bordered by Lodi, New Jersey to the west, Garfield, New Jersey to the southwest, and Teterboro, New Jersey to the southeast. Hasbrouck Heights is also close to Paramus, New Jersey, Rochelle Park, New Jersey, and Saddle Brook, New Jersey. The borough is home to Depot Square Park, Woodside Avenue Park, and the Hasbrouck Heights Public Library, which is a member of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System and offers access to resources from Rutgers University and the New Jersey State Library.

Geography

History

The area that is now Hasbrouck Heights was originally settled by the Lenape Native American tribe and was later colonized by Dutch settlers from New Amsterdam. The borough was formed on August 5, 1894, from portions of Lodi Township, New Jersey, and was named after John Hasbrouck, a Dutch-American settler who owned a large tract of land in the area. Hasbrouck Heights played an important role in the American Industrial Revolution, with the establishment of the Hackensack Water Company and the Bergen County Railway. The borough is also home to the Hasbrouck Heights Historical Society Museum, which features exhibits on the history of the borough and the surrounding area, including the Battle of Trenton and the American Revolutionary War.
