Grand Duke Louis of Hesse

Grand Duke Louis of Hesse was a member of the House of Hesse and ruled as the Grand Duke of Hesse from 1877 until his death in 1892. He was the son of Prince Charles of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Elisabeth of Prussia, and was closely related to other European royal families, including the British royal family and the Russian royal family. Grand Duke Louis of Hesse was also a cousin of Tsar Alexander II of Russia and King Frederick William IV of Prussia, and was related to Queen Victoria through his mother's side of the family, which included Prince Frederick of Prussia and Princess Charlotte of Prussia.

● Early Life

Grand Duke Louis of Hesse was born in Darmstadt, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Hesse, and was educated at the University of Leipzig and the University of Göttingen, where he studied law and philosophy under the tutelage of prominent professors such as Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Carl von Savigny. He was also influenced by the works of Immanuel Kant and Johann Gottlieb Fichte, and was a member of the Corps Hassia Leipzig, a student corporation that included other notable members such as Otto von Bismarck and Prince Albert of Prussia. Grand Duke Louis of Hesse ascended to the throne in 1877 following the death of his uncle, Grand Duke Louis III of Hesse, and worked to modernize the Grand Duchy of Hesse and bring it more closely in line with the other German states, including the Kingdom of Prussia and the Kingdom of Bavaria. He was a supporter of the German Empire and worked closely with Chancellor Otto von Bismarck to promote the interests of Hesse within the empire, and was also a member of the Federal Council of Germany, which included other notable members such as King Ludwig II of Bavaria and Grand Duke Frederick I of Baden. In 1842, Grand Duke Louis of Hesse married Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, the daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and the couple had seven children together, including Victoria, Princess of Hesse and by Rhine, Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia, and Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, who married Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and became the last Empress of Russia. The marriage was arranged by Queen Victoria and was seen as a way of strengthening ties between the British royal family and the House of Hesse, and was also supported by other European royals, including King Leopold I of Belgium and King Frederick William IV of Prussia. Grand Duke Louis of Hesse died in 1892 and was succeeded by his son, Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse, who had previously married Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and had two sons, Prince George Donatus of Hesse and Prince Louis of Hesse. The succession was overseen by Chancellor Leo von Caprivi and was recognized by the other German states, including the Kingdom of Prussia and the Kingdom of Bavaria, and was also acknowledged by other European powers, including the United Kingdom and the Russian Empire. Grand Duke Louis of Hesse was buried in the Rosenhöhe park in Darmstadt, alongside his wife, Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, and other members of the House of Hesse, including Grand Duke Louis III of Hesse and Prince Charles of Hesse and by Rhine.
