Decorah, Iowa

Decorah, Iowa is a city located in the northeastern part of the state, near the Upper Iowa River and surrounded by the Norwegian Ridge and the Oneota Valley. The city is situated in Winneshiek County, about 15 miles west of the Minnesota border, and is close to the Yellow River State Forest and the Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge. Decorah is also near the Ice Cave State Preserve and the Malanaphy Springs State Preserve, and is home to Luther College, a private Liberal arts college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Geography

The city of Decorah is nestled in a valley surrounded by bluffs and hills, with the Upper Iowa River flowing through it. History

The area that is now Decorah was originally inhabited by the Ho-Chunk and Iowa Native American tribes, who were later displaced by European-American settlers. The city was founded in 1849 by a group of Norwegian immigrants, who were attracted to the area by its fertile soil, abundant water, and scenic beauty. Decorah was named after Waukon Decorah, a Ho-Chunk chief who was friendly to the settlers, and was officially incorporated as a city in 1853. The city played an important role in the Underground Railroad, with many abolitionists, including John Brown and Harriet Tubman, passing through the area on their way to Canada.
