Atchison was founded in 1854 by Proslavery Party members, including David Rice Atchison, a United States Senator from Missouri. The city played a significant role in the Bleeding Kansas period, with many notable figures, including John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, and Frederick Douglass, visiting or living in the area. Atchison was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many African Americans escaping from slavery in the Southern United States and making their way to freedom in the Northern United States.
