AileyCamp

AileyCamp is a summer dance program founded by Alvin Ailey in 1989, in collaboration with Kansas City Ballet and Kansas City Kansas Community College. The program aims to provide a unique experience for young people, aged 11-14, from diverse backgrounds, and is inspired by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's mission to promote African American culture and modern dance. AileyCamp is supported by various organizations, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Ford Foundation, and Carnegie Corporation of New York. History

AileyCamp was established in 1989, with the first program taking place in Kansas City, Kansas. The program was created in response to the need for arts education programs that cater to underserved communities, and was inspired by the work of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's founder, Alvin Ailey. Over the years, AileyCamp has expanded to other locations, including New York City, Atlanta, Chicago, and Miami. The program has been supported by various organizations, including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. AileyCamp has also collaborated with other dance companies, such as Martha Graham Dance Company, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Twyla Tharp Dance.

Program

The AileyCamp program is designed to provide a comprehensive dance education experience for young people. The program includes classes in ballet, modern dance, jazz dance, and African dance, as well as workshops in dance history, choreography, and dance criticism. The program also includes performances by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and other guest artists, such as Savion Glover, Judith Jamison, and Garth Fagan. AileyCamp participants also have the opportunity to attend performances by other dance companies, such as New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Dance Theatre of Harlem. The program is led by a team of experienced dance educators, including Masazumi Chaya, Ana Marie Forsythe, and Nancy Turano.
