● History

The 55th–56th–57th Street station was opened on April 23, 1893, as part of the original South Side Elevated line, which ran from Congress Street (CTA) to Jackson Park (CTA). The line was later extended to Englewood (CTA) and became part of the Green Line (CTA). The station has undergone several renovations, including a major reconstruction in the 1990s, which added new platforms, canopies, and accessibility features. The station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated Chicago Landmark.
