Mikko Koivu

Mikko Koivu is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey centre who played in the National Hockey League for the Minnesota Wild and internationally for Finland. A product of the SM-liiga system and a first-round pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, he served as captain of the Wild and was known for two-way play, faceoff proficiency, and leadership. Koivu won multiple medals with Finland at the IIHF World Championship and represented his country at the Winter Olympics.

Early life and junior career

Born in Turku, Koivu developed within the youth system of TPS (ice hockey) alongside contemporaries from the 1999 IIHF World U18 Championship pipeline.
