Eternals (film)

Eternals (film) is a 2021 American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Directed by Chloé Zhao from a screenplay by Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo, the film adapts the Marvel Comics characters created by Jack Kirby. It is the 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and features an ensemble cast portraying immortal beings intervening in human history.

Plot

The narrative follows a group of immortal extraterrestrial beings known as the Eternals who, created by the cosmic Celestial Arishem the Judge, secretly live on Earth after the Great Cataclysm and defend humanity while adhering to orders to avoid interfering in human evolution. Set against global events—from ancient Mesopotamia and Beijing to New York City and London—the Eternals confront the Emergence, a Celestial rebirth that would destroy Earth, prompting debates among members including Ikaris, Sersi, and Thena about loyalty to Arishem versus protection of humanity. As tensions escalate, alliances shift and revelations about the Eternals' past involvement with historical figures like Gilgamesh and events connected to World War II reshape their mission and precipitate a confrontation with the Deviants, the Eternals' original adversaries, and with Arishem himself.
