Xinhui

Xinhui. It is a district under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Jiangmen in Guangdong province, part of the Pearl River Delta economic zone. Renowned as the hometown of the revered modern scholar Liang Qichao, the area is also famous globally for its production of Chenpi, a dried citrus peel integral to Cantonese cuisine and Traditional Chinese medicine. With a rich history dating to the Qin dynasty and a strategic location along the West River, Xinhui has evolved into a significant industrial and cultural hub within the Greater Bay Area.

History

The region's administrative history began with its establishment as a county during the Jin dynasty, with significant development occurring through subsequent eras like the Tang dynasty and Song dynasty. It played a notable role during the late Qing dynasty and the Republican era as a center of intellectual reform, largely due to the influence of native son Liang Qichao. The Second Sino-Japanese War saw activity in the area, and following the establishment of the People's Republic of China, it was incorporated into Foshan Prefecture before being transferred to Jiangmen. In 2002, Xinhui was upgraded from a county-level city to a district, accelerating its integration into the regional economy of the Pearl River Delta.

Geography

Xinhui is situated on the western bank of the Pearl River Delta, bordering the South China Sea to the south, with Zhongshan and Jiangmen's Pengjiang District to the east and northeast. Its topography is dominated by the alluvial plains of the West River and Tanjiang River, with the prominent Gudou Mountain range in the northwest. The district features an extensive coastline and is known for the Xinhui Guifengshan Provincial Forest Park and the vital Yamen Waterway. Its humid subtropical climate fosters the growth of the distinctive Chachi citrus cultivar, used for Chenpi.

Economy

Traditionally an agricultural region, Xinhui's economy has diversified into robust manufacturing, papermaking, and food processing industries. It is internationally synonymous with Chenpi, a protected product with Geographical indication status that supports a major local agricultural sector. The district hosts the Jiangmen Xinhui Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Park and is a key base for companies like Vinda International and Zhongshun Jiezhou. Major infrastructure such as the Xinhui Port and connections to the Guangzhou–Zhuhai Intercity Railway and Jiangmen–Zhongshan–Jiangyang Expressway facilitate trade and position it within the advanced manufacturing corridor of the Greater Bay Area.

Culture

Xinhui possesses a distinct cultural identity within Lingnan culture, celebrated for its contributions to Cantonese opera and the preservation of ancestral temples like the Liang Qichao Memorial Hall. The annual Xinhui Chenpi Cultural Festival highlights its most famous agricultural product. The district is the ancestral home for many overseas Chinese, particularly from the Siyi region, whose remittances historically shaped local architecture and institutions. Culinary traditions prominently feature Chenpi in dishes such as Chenpi duck and pastries, while local crafts include intricate Lingnan-style wood carving.

As a district of Jiangmen, Xinhui's administrative divisions include 1 subdistrict, 10 towns, and 1 economic development zone, including Huicheng Subdistrict, Siqian Town, and Daze Town. Key administrative and judicial bodies are located in Huicheng Subdistrict, which functions as the district seat. The local government oversees numerous industrial parks, including the Xinhui Economic Development Zone, and manages public services across its territory, which borders Taishan and Kaiping to the west.
