History

The area's prominence began in the Ming dynasty as a suburb outside the old city walls of Guangzhou. It reached its zenith during the Qing dynasty when the Thirteen Factories and foreign Cohong merchants operated nearby, making it a central hub in the Canton Trade. Wealthy merchants and compradors built lavish residences here, creating a distinct social and commercial enclave. The district witnessed significant historical events, including the First Opium War and the later development of Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary activities in the early 20th century. Its character was shaped by the interplay of foreign influence and local Cantonese enterprise.

Geography

Xiguan is situated in the western part of Guangzhou, historically defined as the area west of the old city wall and north of the Pearl River. It is encompassed within the modern administrative boundaries of Liwan District, bordering the Zhongshan 7th Road to the east. The district is crisscrossed by a network of traditional waterways and canals, such as those connected to the Liwan Lake, which were vital for transport and commerce. Xiguan is considered the heartland of authentic Cantonese culture, influencing everything from cuisine and opera to gardening and tea culture. The area is famous for its delicate Xiguan pastries and the elaborate morning tea tradition, with century-old establishments like the Panxi Restaurant operating here. It was also a center for Cantonese music, particularly instrumental ensemble music, and the crafting of traditional items such as embroidery and bone china. The local dialect, the Xiguan accent, is viewed as a prestigious variant of the Guangzhou dialect.
