Xi'an Jiaotong University

Xi'an Jiaotong University is a public research university and a national key institution located in Xi'an, Shaanxi. History

The institution originated in 1896 as the Nanyang Public School in Shanghai, founded by the influential imperial official Sheng Xuanhuai with approval from the Guangxu Emperor. It was renamed Shanghai Industrial College in 1897 and later became known as Chiao Tung University in 1921. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the university relocated to the interior, operating in sites like Chongqing. A pivotal event in its development was the 1956 relocation of the main university, directed by the State Council, from Shanghai to Xi'an, an effort supporting industrial development in northwest China. This move, involving thousands of faculty and students, cemented its role as a cornerstone of the nation's higher education system. In 2000, it merged with Xi'an Medical University and Shaanxi Institute of Finance and Economics, significantly expanding its scope into medical and financial disciplines.
