X Force

X Force is a superhero team appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The team first appeared in New Mutants #100 (April 1991) before launching into its own ongoing series, created by writer-artist Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza. Originally conceived as a more militant, proactive offshoot of the New Mutants, the team has undergone numerous roster changes and thematic shifts, often operating with a lethal, paramilitary ethos distinct from other X-Men affiliated groups. History

The concept for the team emerged during a major creative overhaul of the New Mutants title in the early 1990s, spearheaded by Rob Liefeld. Following the events of the "X-Tinction Agenda" crossover, the young mutants were reorganized by the militant Cable into a more aggressive strike force. The new team's formation was formalized in New Mutants #100, which served as a prelude to the launch of the ongoing X Force series. Fictional team biography

The original team was assembled by Cable, who believed the X-Men's pacifist methods were inadequate against escalating threats. Based in a floating fortress called the Ship, this squad included Tabitha Smith, Sam Guthrie, and Maria Callasantos. Their early missions involved confronting terrorist groups like the Mutant Liberation Front and the Rights. Following Cable's apparent death, the team was briefly led by the Wolverine-clone X-23 before Shatterstar and Siryn took command. A major turning point was the "Sex and Violence" storyline, which saw the team disband. The concept was reborn as a covert black ops unit under Cyclops and Wolverine, featuring Archangel, Wolfsbane, and Warpath. This team executed morally ambiguous missions, including the assassination of the child-host of the Apocalypse entity. Later, during the Krakoa era, a new X Force was formed as the mutant nation's official intelligence and security department, led by Beast and Jean Grey, and later Wolverine, dealing with threats like XENO and internal corruption.

The roster has included a vast array of characters from across the Marvel Universe. Founding members typically include Cable, Domino, Shatterstar, Feral, Warpath, and Cannonball. Notable leaders beyond Cable have been Wolverine, Cyclops, and Psylocke. In the ''X-Men'' film series, a version of the team appears in the 2018 film Deadpool 2, assembled by Wade Wilson and including Domino, Bedlam, and the Shatterstar. The 1990s animated series featured episodes with Cable and Domino that hinted at the team's concept. The squad is more prominently featured in the ''Wolverine and the X-Men'' animated series, where Wolverine leads a black-ops team consisting of Wolfsbane, Warpath, and X-23.
