William T. Brigham

William T. Brigham was an American botanist, geologist, and museum director who made significant contributions to the natural history of the Hawaiian Islands. He served as the first director of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in Honolulu, where he built its foundational collections and championed scientific research. His pioneering geological work, particularly on the volcanoes of Hawaiʻi Island, helped lay the groundwork for the establishment of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Early life and education

William Tufts Brigham was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to a prominent New England family. He pursued his higher education at Harvard University, where he studied under renowned naturalists like Asa Gray and Louis Agassiz. After graduating, Brigham traveled extensively in Europe and North Africa, further cultivating his interests in botany and archaeology before turning his focus to the Pacific.

Career and botanical work

Brigham first visited the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1864–1865, conducting botanical surveys that would form the basis of his lifelong work. He returned to Honolulu in 1888 at the invitation of Charles Reed Bishop to organize the collections of the newly founded Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum. As its first director, Brigham traveled throughout the Hawaiian archipelago, as well as to the Marquesas and Samoa, amassing vast herbarium specimens and ethnological artifacts. His botanical publications included studies on the native forests of Haleakalā and the flora of the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory

Brigham's geological investigations were equally consequential. He made multiple expeditions to the active volcanoes of Hawaiʻi Island, especially Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, publishing detailed observations in the museum's memoirs. His 1909 monograph, *The Volcanoes of Kilauea and Mauna Loa*, became a seminal text. This work, emphasizing the need for continuous, instrument-based monitoring, directly influenced Thomas Jaggar and the eventual founding of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory in 1912 under the auspices of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the U.S. Weather Bureau.

Later life and death

After retiring from the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in 1918, Brigham remained in Honolulu, actively participating in the scientific community of the Territory of Hawaii. He continued to write and advise on matters of Hawaiian natural history and volcanology until his death. William Tufts Brigham died at his home in Honolulu on January 30, 1926, and was interred at the Nuʻuanu Memorial Park.

Brigham's legacy is preserved in the foundational collections of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum and in the establishment of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
