The winery was established in 1883 by German immigrant Carl H. Wente, who purchased land in the Livermore Valley. He planted vineyards with cuttings sourced from the esteemed Charles Krug Winery in Napa Valley. Under the leadership of his sons, Ernest Wente and Herman Wente, the business expanded significantly in the early 20th century, surviving the challenges of Prohibition in the United States by selling sacramental wine and grape juice. A landmark moment occurred in 1936 when Ernest Wente brought Chardonnay cuttings from Montpellier, France, which became the "Wente Clone," a genetic cornerstone for over 80% of California's Chardonnay vineyards.
