Welsh-Ryan Arena

Welsh-Ryan Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena located on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Primarily serving as the home venue for the Northwestern Wildcats men's basketball, Northwestern Wildcats women's basketball, and Northwestern Wildcats wrestling teams, the facility is a central hub for Big Ten Conference athletics. The arena has undergone significant transformations since its mid-20th century opening, evolving from a basic field house into a modern collegiate sports complex.

History

The arena's origins trace back to the early 1950s, when it was constructed as part of a broader expansion of athletic facilities at Northwestern University. Originally named the McGaw Memorial Hall, it was dedicated in honor of Foster G. McGaw, a prominent alumnus and founder of the American Hospital Supply Corporation. For decades, the building served as the primary home for Northwestern Wildcats men's basketball, hosting numerous contests against historic rivals like the Illinois Fighting Illini and the Michigan Wolverines. In 1983, following a major gift from trustees Patrick G. Ryan and his wife, Shirley Welsh Ryan, the facility was renamed in their honor. This period also saw the rise of the Northwestern Wildcats women's basketball program following the passage of Title IX.

Facilities and features

The arena's interior is configured with a single bowl of permanent seating, creating an intimate atmosphere for spectators. The main court is named for legendary Northwestern Wildcats coach Arthur L. "Dutch" Lonborg. A distinctive feature is the M&M's-branded center-hung scoreboard, part of a corporate partnership. The complex is directly connected to the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion, providing shared access to training facilities, locker rooms, and sports medicine services operated by Northwestern Medicine. The concourse level houses concession stands, merchandise outlets for Nike, Inc. apparel, and displays celebrating the history of Northwestern Wildcats athletics.

Events

Beyond its primary function for Northwestern Wildcats sports, the arena has hosted a wide array of events. It has been a site for NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament games and NCAA Division I wrestling championships. The venue has welcomed major concerts by artists including Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, and John Mellencamp. It has also staged family shows like the Harlem Globetrotters, commencement ceremonies for Northwestern University schools, and large-scale university assemblies. During the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, it was a host site for the National Invitation Tournament.

Renovations

The most comprehensive overhaul in the arena's history was a $110 million reconstruction project undertaken from 2017 to 2018. This renovation, led by the architectural firm Perkins and Will, completely rebuilt the interior while preserving the original exterior facade and iconic roof trusses. Key upgrades included the installation of chair-back seating throughout, new premium spaces like the Welsh-Ryan Club and Ryan Family Lounge, and a state-of-the-art video board. The project also significantly enhanced accessibility standards, added modern locker rooms for the Northwestern Wildcats women's basketball team, and improved infrastructure for broadcast partners like the Big Ten Network.
