The formation of Wellforce was announced in 2014 through the strategic merger of two major health systems: Tufts Medical Center and the Circle Health network, which included Lowell General Hospital. This consolidation was a significant development within the competitive Massachusetts healthcare landscape, responding to trends of system integration seen with other major networks like Partners HealthCare (now Mass General Brigham) and Beth Israel Lahey Health. The system later expanded its footprint by formally affiliating with MelroseWakefield Healthcare in 2018 and Covenant Health in 2020, broadening its reach into the Merrimack Valley and New Hampshire. These strategic moves were designed to create a more resilient network capable of managing population health under evolving models like the Affordable Care Act.
