Wellcome Library. The Wellcome Library is a major public resource and one of the world's leading libraries for the history of medicine, located in London. History

The library's origins lie in the extraordinary personal collection of Henry Wellcome, co-founder of the pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Company. A passionate collector, Wellcome amassed over a million objects related to medical history, anthropology, and alchemy, which formed the basis of the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum established in 1913. Following his death in 1936, the Wellcome Trust was created to manage his estate and further his vision for advancing medical research. The library was formally inaugurated in 1949, consolidating his books and manuscripts. Building and facilities

The library is housed within the Wellcome Collection building at 183 Euston Road, adjacent to the headquarters of the Wellcome Trust. The building, which underwent a significant redevelopment by the architects Hopkins Architects, opened to the public in 2007. The library itself occupies several floors, featuring a public reading room, secure areas for consulting rare materials, and dedicated spaces for viewing films and audio-visual archives. It shares the building with the Wellcome Collection's public galleries, a café, and a bookshop, creating an integrated cultural hub. The facilities are designed to support both academic researchers and the general public, with on-site conservation laboratories to preserve fragile items.

Access and services

Access to the library is free and open to all for research and reference purposes, with no membership or letter of introduction required. While the reading rooms are publicly accessible, some special collections require advance appointment. A primary service is its extensive online catalog, which provides records for the majority of its holdings. The library has pioneered major digital initiatives, such as Wellcome Images and Codebreakers: Makers of Modern Genetics, which provide free online access to hundreds of thousands of digitized items. It offers research support, runs workshops and public events, and participates in international collaborative projects like the Medical Heritage Library.

Governance and funding

The library is an integral part of the Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation established under the will of Henry Wellcome. Its governance and strategic direction are set by the Trust's board of governors and its executive leadership team. Core funding is provided through the Trust's endowment, which derives from the historic success of Burroughs Wellcome & Company and subsequent investments. This stable funding allows for free public access, ongoing acquisitions, and major digitization projects. The library also secures additional project funding through grants from bodies like the National Lottery Heritage Fund and partnerships with institutions such as the British Library and Jisc.
