In 1919, the company underwent a pivotal transformation when its long-time manager, Walter de Gruyter, purchased the businesses of Georg Reimer Verlag, the G. J. Göschen'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung, and the Verlag von Karl J. Trübner, consolidating them under the new name Walter de Gruyter & Co. The publisher endured significant challenges during World War II and the subsequent division of Berlin, but it continued its scholarly mission. After German reunification, the company was re-established as a family-owned enterprise and has since expanded its international reach considerably.
