Wally Adeyemo

Wally Adeyemo Wally Adeyemo is an American financial expert and government official who has served as the Deputy Secretary of the Treasury since 2021. He previously worked in various roles, including as a BlackRock executive and in the Obama administration. Adeyemo has been a key figure in shaping the Biden administration's economic policies. He has also been involved in various international financial institutions.

Early life and education

Adeyemo was born in Ibadan, Nigeria, to Nigerian parents. He immigrated to the United States with his family at a young age and grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland. Adeyemo attended St. John's College (Annapolis), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy. He later earned a Master of Arts degree in education from Harvard University and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

Early career

Adeyemo began his career in the non-profit sector, working at organizations such as the National Alliance to End Homelessness and the Center for American Progress. He then worked at BlackRock, where he served as a managing director and helped to develop the company's exchange-traded fund (ETF) business. Adeyemo also worked at Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategy firm founded by Madeleine Albright.

Obama administration

In 2014, Adeyemo joined the Obama administration as the senior adviser to the National Security Council and coordinator for sanctions policy. He played a key role in shaping the Iran nuclear deal and worked closely with Secretary of State John Kerry and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. Adeyemo also served as the deputy chief of staff to President Barack Obama.

Deputy Secretary of the Treasury

In 2021, Adeyemo was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as the Deputy Secretary of the Treasury. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on April 13, 2021. As Deputy Secretary, Adeyemo has worked closely with Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen to shape the Biden administration's economic policies, including the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act. He has also played a key role in the International Monetary Fund and the G20.

Personal life

Adeyemo is married to Jenna Arnold, a former Obama administration official. The couple has two children and lives in Washington, D.C..
