Wachusett station is a commuter rail station located in Westminster, Massachusetts. It serves the MBTA Commuter Rail's Fitchburg Line and is the line's northwestern terminus. The station opened in December 2016, extending passenger service beyond Fitchburg for the first time in over fifty years.

History

The station's construction was a key component of the Fitchburg Line extension project, a major infrastructure initiative undertaken by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. This project aimed to improve regional transit and economic development in North Central Massachusetts. The location near the Wachusett Mountain State Reservation and the Wachusett Brewing Company was selected to serve both commuters and recreational travelers. Planning involved collaboration with the Montachusett Regional Transit Authority and local officials from Westminster and Fitchburg. The station officially opened for passenger service on December 19, 2016, with inaugural ceremonies attended by then-Governor Charlie Baker and Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack.

Station layout

The station features a single, high-level side platform adjacent to one active track, which is part of the Pan Am Southern main line. The platform is approximately 800 feet long and is fully accessible, complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. A modern, heated waiting shelter with restrooms is provided for passengers. The station's design incorporates elements reflecting the surrounding region, including references to the nearby Wachusett Mountain. A large park-and-ride lot provides over 300 parking spaces, while a dedicated area offers bicycle storage. The station's layout was designed by HNTB Corporation and constructed by Barletta Heavy Division.

Services

Wachusett station is the terminus for all MBTA Commuter Rail trains on the Fitchburg Line, providing direct service to North Station in Boston. Typical weekday service consists of approximately five inbound trips during the morning peak and five outbound trips during the evening peak, with limited midday and weekend service. The station is located in MBTA fare Zone 8. Connecting bus service is provided by the Montachusett Regional Transit Authority (MART), with routes linking to Fitchburg, Leominster, and Gardner. The station also facilitates access to recreational destinations like the Wachusett Mountain Ski Area and the Wachusett Mountain State Reservation.

Operations

Train movements at Wachusett are controlled by dispatchers from CSX Transportation, which operates the underlying freight rail corridor. The station functions as a layover facility, with trains occupying the platform between scheduled trips. Station maintenance and cleaning are managed by the MBTA, while security is provided through a combination of the MBTA Police and surveillance systems. The construction of the station and its layover facility required significant upgrades to the existing rail infrastructure, including new signaling and the installation of a passing loop near the Fitchburg station to maintain freight and passenger operations.
