Vy (transport operator). Vy is a major state-owned enterprise and the primary passenger rail operator in Norway, formed from the restructuring of the former Norwegian State Railways (NSB). The company operates extensive long-distance, regional, and commuter rail services across the country, as well as some bus routes, and has expanded its operations into the Swedish market. Owned by the Ministry of Transport (Norway), Vy plays a central role in the Norwegian railway network, connecting major cities like Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Stavanger.

History

The operator was established on 24 April 2019, when the historic Norwegian State Railways (NSB) was split into separate entities for infrastructure management and passenger operations. This reorganization followed broader European Union directives on railway reform and the separation of track and train operations, a model also seen in countries like Sweden with SJ AB and the United Kingdom following the Railways Act 1993. The Bane NOR infrastructure company was created concurrently to manage the national railway track. The Vy brand was introduced to signify a new, modernized identity focused solely on transport services, moving away from the historical state monopoly structure of the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Operations

Vy operates the majority of passenger train services in Norway, including the famed Bergen Line between Oslo and Bergen and the Dovre Line to Trondheim. Its service portfolio is divided into several categories: Vy express trains for long-distance routes, regional trains for inter-city connections, and the Ruter-contracted Oslo Commuter Rail network. The company also runs rail replacement bus services and has won competitive tenders in Sweden, operating routes such as the Älvsbyn–Arvidsjaur line. Key operational hubs include Oslo Central Station, Bergen Station, and Trondheim Central Station, with maintenance performed at major depots like Grorud Depot.

Rolling stock

The company's fleet consists of various modern electric multiple unit and diesel multiple unit trains. Primary models include the Bombardier Talent for regional services, the Stadler FLIRT used extensively on commuter and regional lines, and the AnsaldoBreda Type 73 for the Oslo Commuter Rail. For long-distance services, Vy operates the comfortable Signatur coaches and the newer BM 74 units. The iconic Bergen Line is served by modernized B7 carriages. The fleet is maintained at facilities including the Grorud Depot in Oslo and the Stavanger maintenance center, with ongoing projects to introduce new zero-emission trains in line with national environmental goals.

Corporate affairs

Vy is fully owned by the Norwegian state through the Ministry of Transport (Norway), functioning under the regulatory framework of the Norwegian Railway Authority. The company's operations are governed by public service obligation contracts with Rail Directorate and regional authorities like Viken county. Its expansion into Sweden is managed through the subsidiary Vy Tåg AB, which competes in the open Swedish rail transport market. Corporate strategy focuses on sustainability, digitalization of ticketing through the Vy app, and increasing market share against competitors like Flytoget and Go-Ahead Norge.
