Visayas. The Visayas, also known as the Visayan Islands, is one of the three principal geographical divisions of the Philippines, located in the central part of the archipelago. It is composed of several major islands, including Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, and Samar, along with numerous smaller islands. The region is renowned for its rich history, vibrant cultural festivals, and significant economic contributions to the nation.

Geography

The Visayas is an archipelago situated between the Luzon and Mindanao island groups, bounded by several major bodies of water including the Visayan Sea, the Camotes Sea, the Sibuyan Sea, and the Bohol Sea. Its topography is diverse, featuring prominent mountain ranges like the Central Panay Mountain Range and active volcanoes such as Mount Kanlaon on Negros and the Biliran Volcano. Notable natural landmarks include the geological formations of the Chocolate Hills on Bohol, the extensive cave systems of Sohoton Caves in Samar, and the pristine marine ecosystems of the Apo Reef and Danjugan Island. Major straits like the San Juanico Strait, spanned by the iconic San Juanico Bridge, separate key islands, while long coastlines support important ports like Port of Cebu and Port of Iloilo.

History

The recorded history of the islands begins with early contact from traders from the Srivijaya and Majapahit empires. A pivotal moment occurred in 1521 when the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, sailing for Spain, arrived and planted Magellan's Cross in Cebu, leading to the Battle of Mactan where chieftain Lapu-Lapu resisted Spanish colonization. Full conquest was later achieved by Miguel López de Legazpi, who established settlements in Cebu City and Iloilo City, making the region a cornerstone of the Spanish East Indies. The Visayas was a significant theater during the Philippine Revolution and the subsequent Philippine–American War, with events like the Battle of Balangiga. In the modern era, it suffered greatly during the Battle of Leyte in World War II, a key component of General Douglas MacArthur's return. The region has also been the site of natural disasters, including the devastating 2013 Bohol earthquake and Typhoon Haiyan.

Demographics

With a population exceeding 20 million, the Visayas is a linguistic and ethnic mosaic. The largest ethnolinguistic groups are the Cebuanos, concentrated in Cebu, Bohol, and parts of Leyte; the Hiligaynons or Ilonggos of Panay and Negros Occidental; and the Warays of Samar and Leyte. Significant minority communities include the Ati of Panay, the Chinese Filipinos with historic roots in Cebu City, and the American expatriate communities in areas like Boracay. Major urban centers that serve as demographic hubs are Cebu City, Bacolod, Iloilo City, and Tacloban, alongside growing cities such as Dumaguete and Tagbilaran.

Culture

Visayan culture is expressed through vibrant festivals, distinct culinary traditions, and a rich artistic heritage. The region is famous for its grand fiestas, most notably the Sinulog in Cebu City honoring the Santo Niño, the Dinagyang in Iloilo City, and the MassKara Festival in Bacolod. Its cuisine features iconic dishes like lechon, kinilaw, and piaya. Traditional music and dance forms include the Rondalla ensemble and the Kuratsa dance. The region has produced nationally revered figures such as the revolutionary leader Leon Kilat, the painter Martino Abellana, and contemporary celebrities like Lea Salonga. Ancient scripts, such as the Baybayin-inspired Badlit, and enduring folk beliefs centered on figures like the aswang are part of its cultural tapestry.

Economy

The economy of the Visayas is diversified, with strong sectors in services, industry, and agriculture. Cebu City serves as a major hub for business process outsourcing, tourism, and trade, hosting the Mactan–Cebu International Airport. The region is a leading producer of sugarcane, particularly in Negros, with major milling operations by companies like Victorias Milling Company. Other key agricultural products include rice from Iloilo, corn, and coconuts. Fishing is vital in provinces like Capiz and Bohol, while manufacturing centers on Mactan Island produce electronics and furniture. Tourism is a cornerstone, driven by world-famous destinations such as the beaches of Boracay, Panglao Island, and Malapascua, as well as heritage sites in Vigan (nearby) and Silay City.

Administrative divisions

The Visayas is politically divided into three regions: the Western Visayas (Region VI), Central Visayas (Region VII), and Eastern Visayas (Region VIII). Western Visayas includes the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental, with Iloilo City as its regional center. Central Visayas comprises Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor, governed from Cebu City. Eastern Visayas is made up of Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Samar, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar, with Tacloban as its capital.
